CHIMES OF LIGHT
Created by Nude Ateljé in honour of Denniz Pop
We are happy and proud to donate the light piece ”Chimes of light”, created by architect Eva-Lotta Axelsson in honour of Dag Krister Volle, aka Denniz Pop. Denniz Pop was one of Sweden’s most appreciated and successful music producers and songwriters until his tragic passing in August 1998, after a short battle with cancer.
The piece was auctioned off during the Denniz Pop Awards gala June 17th and all the proceedings was donated to the Denniz Pop Awards charitable foundation, working to uplift Sweden’s next generation of musical talent and support advancements in cancer treatment by assisting the work of Radiumhemmet.
”I felt very grateful to be asked to create a piece in honour of Denniz Pop, reflecting his personality, and I immediately said yes!” Eva-Lotta says. ”I visualized a timeless piece full of light and warmth, made with materials that would last and become more beautiful over time. People had confidence in Denniz Pop and he was a very down to earth person. So I used wood because trees are rooted and stand strong no matter what. And since sharing was another great part of his personality I created numerous sources of light, and placed them on different levels, so that they illuminate each other – creating a chimes of light!”
“I have my own very personal connection to Radiumhemmet since I have been diagnosed with cancer twice. After my last surgery, some ten years ago, I visited daily during several months. The staff is just amazing, there are no words to describe the work they do. Each and every day they literally make a difference between life and death. This is an opportunity to show my gratitude for their amazing work,” Eva-Lotta says.
“Chimes of light” is a big piece (2,5-3 meters long) made of American walnut, giving it a warm texture and soft colours. I have also used brass, because it will change over time as you touch it, and it almost adapts and blends with the environment where it is used,” Eva-Lotta says. “Both materials have a very distinct feel to them. For me contrast is very important and, even though one is soft and the other one hard, together they will create a beautiful patina over time.”
